Ready to organize for municipal socialism in your chapter?
We are members of Democratic Socialists of America organizing to advance municipal socialism.
DSA Municipal Socialists is an endorsement list for egalitarian urban abundance. It is not a caucus, but rather includes candidates who have a caucus affiliation as well as those who are uncaucused.
Candidate slate to follow. All NYC-DSA members in good standing are eligible to vote. Cast your vote by Tuesday, September 24th.
Municipal issues are worker's issues.
Abundant housing, frequent public transit, and streets designed for people are shared use values. They improve the living conditions of workers, and their collective and cosmopolitan character supports the development of class consciousness.
Broadly shared and high quality urban public services are necessary to reverse the segregation of the 20th century and the climate crisis of the 21st.
Learning details of policy and implementation is an important part of a socialist organizer's political development, alongside theory and strategy.
We not only have a world to win, but a world to build.
Voting for delegates to NYC-DSA’s 2024 convention begins on Wednesday, September 18, and all votes must be cast by 7 PM on Tuesday, September 24. All members in good standing may vote. Voting is by branch, and follows a voting system called Single Transferable Vote (STV) which is explained using donuts in this video.
In practice, most delegates are elected from slates that are organized by caucuses, which recommend caucus members and fellow-travelers to vote for. DSA Municipal Socialists is not a caucus, so our endorsement list is different from a typical slate. While we believe that municipal socialist views are widespread throughout the chapter, they are not the main issues that animate chapter politics and thus not the main criteria by which most candidates are endorsed. So, we have chosen to contest just under 10% of the 150 delegate seats in order to ensure a municipal socialist presence at a convention that will address a variety of other issues as well. Voters who rank our slate high will be able to vote for many other candidates as well.
Of the caucus slates, one includes candidates who are also on the DSA Municipal Socialists endorsement list. That slate is Groundwork & Friends. The reason for the cross-endorsement between some DSA Municipal Socialists and some Groundwork & Friends is that many Groundwork members’ views on DSA politics reflect what they have learned developing campaigns such as Build Public Renewables and House the Future, often in collaboration with uncaucused municipal socialists who are on our endorsement list. Therefore, DSA Municipal Socialists includes a mix of uncaucused candidates who are also on the Groundwork & Friends slate, candidates who are full Groundwork members, and uncaucused candidates who are not on any caucus slate.
We encourage members to rank our endorsed candidates first in the order they appear above. We also encourage members to familiarize themselves with the positions of the various slates and make an informed decision about who else to rank. By ranking as many candidates as they feel comfortable supporting, members maximize the likelihood that their other views will also be represented at convention.
